Hello!
I'm new to this mailing list and after some search I didn't manage to find what I need so I try to ask:
I installed the last vnc server free edition on Win XP with SP2. To conect to it works only if I use the user-mode server. But that does not bother me. The problem is that someone from another Win XP SP2 from Romania could connect to my Pc from The Netherlands but as I tried to connect to my PC from a Linux behind a firewall it does not work. It gets no response from that pc on which I'm trying to log in. When I ping it it responds. My linux is a RH for 64 bits.
Can anyone help? If further details are necessary I can provide them.

I think I understand what you're saying... when you ping the address of your
router, you get a ping response, but you cannot connect to the VNC server.
If I understand you correctly, there are a couple things you need to check:
1) Make sure you have the ports forwarded in your router to your XP box. 2)
Make sure that any firewalls you have (including the XP firewall) are
configured to permit VNC in.

Ok. I understand a bit better now. I tend to agree with you regarding your
work machine being behind a firewall... I suspect if you check with your
IS/IT department they will tell you that the server is behind a firewall as
well, but that SSH is allowed through the firewall, but VNC is not. If you
ask them nicely, they may permit you to connect to your PC at home via VNC
or SSH or something similar... Alternatively you may want to look at one of
the services which will allow you to connect two firewalled PCs without
modifying the firewalls.

Hi John,
I'm not sure I know how to do the first point.
For the second point I enabled the access of the VNC to any port in my
BitDefender and also in Win Firewall. This is done already. The thing is
that from another win machine, and even from another country my brother
could connect to my win pc, but from work ( RH for 64bit AMD) I cannot get
any answer for the VNC.
Simply put: from an XP machine it works, from a linux not. I think it is
worth telling you some other things.
There is a server on our lan at work to which I can do an SSH from wherever
I want. But on my linux PC on my desk SSH does not work. So I think my pc is
behind a firewall and the server not. But even from the server I can not
connect to my win pc at home :((((((((((((((

Any other hints?

For the record, I strongly urge you to contact your IT/IS people and get
their authorization, as failure to do so could cause problems.
