server scaling?

Greetings;

Long time VNC user, first time poster.
I very much enjoy and appreciate the VNC system.
I have VNC server running on a win00 laptop and a Sun
Blade Solaris 8 system.

I've used my Samsung I300 to Palm VNC into them and it
works fine. The problem I run into is when I try to
scale the display on the Palm to a setting other then
1:1.

The Palm VNC FAQ says that the VNC server must support
scaling extensions. How would I check if the VNC
server that I've installed has scaling extensions? Is
this a function of Xvnc or is it part of the OS? Is
this a VNC configuration option?

It's most likely an extention in Xvnc. It's handled between Xvnc and the
vncviewer. If you try to connect with this scaling and it does not work,
most likely the Xvnc does not support it.

Origionally this scaling is added to reduce the bandwith between server and
viewer (I think). For palm and other small-screen machines, I should say
that the viewer should be able to scale even without support from the
server, just to get an overview of the screen.

Try `Xvnc --help` and it shows a brief description of it's options.

Hi All

Hope you might be able To help me am running the lastest version of vnc on
my Nt4 with IIS 4 servers behind a firewall ,, the firewall guy says the
firewall is fine and it is,,, but on two web servers vnc crashs on a daily
basis and needs to be restarted and on the other Web servers it works fine
never crashs ,, its seems to be Something to do with memeory allocation in
Nt as the error seems to suggest that vnc is trying to use the same memeory
as something else

Has anyone come accross this before,, Any ideas on how to solve this issue

Thanks

Rob

The Palm VNC FAQ says that the VNC server must support
scaling extensions.
The first sentence of the PalmVNC readme.txt says,

It is strongly recommended that you install
both the PalmVNC client and the WinVNC-3.3.3r7
with Scaling Extensions. If an alternative VNC
server is used, the scaling features of PalmVNC
will not be available.

AFAIK, there are only two ways you could be running a server with scaling
extensions compatible with PalmVNC 1.40:

First, you installed the WinVNC binary bundled with PalmVNC
1.40--WinVNC-SSS v3.3.3r7 with Server Side Scaling extensions v1.7.0.

Or, second, you downloaded the sources from Harakan Software and compiled
them for Windows.

I don't know how one takes advantage of PalmVNC" scaling when viewing
a .*n.?x machine.

server that I've installed has scaling extensions?
Either you would know that you had (perhaps compiled and) installed them,
or, for Windows, when you choose from the WinVNC-SSS tray icon "About
WinVNC", it would say WinVNC-SSS (WinVNC version 3.3.3r7 -- Server Side
Scaling Extensions v1.7.0).
Post by Disaster Area
Is this a function of Xvnc or is it part of the OS?
I believe the source (with scaling extensions) has to be compiled for X.
Post by Disaster Area
Is this a VNC configuration option?
No.

I've just begun an attempt at itegrating the SSS extensions into the latest tight vnc source. The first problem, is that their source is based on version r7 and rfb protocol 3.3. I've generated a patch file off the 3.3.3r7 source from Harakan software. They are the scaling extensions. If you are interested in the patch I can send it to you. Perhaps someone with a bit more time can take it a step further and integrate it into 3.3.3r9? The patch is around 70-80k btw, so I'd rather not email it to the list.

Thanks!
Alex

One other thing. Has anyone implemented a client that uses SSS that's NOT for an embedded (ie, Palm, etc) device? It would be nice if this showed up in the regular vnc viewer.

eSVNC is based on TightVNC 1.2.2 and has SSS. It also has file
transfers and a much improved routine for detecting screen updates that
fixes the polling slowdown problems.

He just released it last week and Constantin has already expressed
interest in merging some/all the changes into a future version of
TightVNC.

It makes a great Win32 VNC server, but I recommend sticking to the Tight
1.2.4 client. You still gain most of the new features.
