I am running VNC 3.3.7 on Windows 2000. While connecting from any Windows
2000 OR Xp workstation, I get authenticated but get a Blank Screen.
I would appreciate any help

If you have fast user switching turned on, you will get a black screen. You
can still use the cute little graphical login screen if you want, but you
must have fast user switching off.

You don't have that because he thought your VNC server is installed in WinXP, which is not your case. WinXP has a function called "fast user switching" which isn't in Win2k.

When you say "blank screen", have you waited long enough? Do you have this problem when your server machine is in screene saver mode or not?

Oh, but you can add fast user switching to 2K. It's either a service pack
or a tweak or "Plus" pack. I used it all the time up until about a year ago
when I switched to XP.

Wait a moment, it's even worse. It's not clear at all. What have you done exactly?

It seems that starting VNC in a Terminal Service session isn't working as expected. You'd better get in the front of the console and start it there.

The problem is that I don't have physical access to the server. This is the
only way I could get in to the server. What happens is that due to some
reason Terminal Services locks the connections and requires a reboot. Since
there is no monitor on that box, remote-hands has to go to the data center
and power cycle the box. I am trying to find an easy to reboot OR restart
the terminal services. rajeev

Do you use VNC as a means to get to the console in order to reboot the server? If yes, I don't think you need it. If you login to TS as an administrator, you have the right to reboot the server in session as well as in console.

OTOH, if yours is Win2003, you could even use TS to get to the console. Just use
server_name /console
in computer field. For this to work, you also need the newest TS client, whose name has been changed to "Remote Desktop Connection", a component in WinXP.

Hope this help.

In service pack? Would it be possible? I think it's most likely a tweak or in admin kit. I've found that when a WinXP is inside a domain, the "fast user switching" is somehow disabled. Or there's some obscure parameter to make it work again?

That's odd? We are exclusivly XP Pro at work and have our own Domain.
BUT... for obvious security reasons I had to go through and set everybody
to "press <Ctrl-Alt-Del> to login" which seems to disable that function.

I've found the login stuff in XP in particular to start to get rather quirky
at times. It may be a case where it depends on which ORDER you load stuff
in and whether you set up the domain during install or later, etc....

Just gotta love Bill.

John

I see. Too bad (or maybe not :) ). There's still a long way for Windows to catch up Linux in which it's easy to switch to another display and login as whoever you want. The day when Bill copies everything from Unix to his dear Windows platform, I think I can tell my friends to switch completely to Linux without hesitation. There would be no difference :D
