Discussion:
RealVNC Server without screen

Hello,

I use RealVNC Enterprise 4.6 server on Windows 7 SP1 x64 and I would need
to run it without display connected to PC.
At first when I disconnected the screen from graphics card (PCIe card) I
had no problem, but after a reboot it doesn't work.
I can connect to the VNC server remotely but the client window is
completely black. Although I can interact blindly and see a trail cursor
sometimes.

As I was reading RealVNC requires a screen to keep active graphics card. *Is
there no chance of working without a display?* Such as installing a
"virtual screen"?
It is impossible for me to connect a display now, and otherwise I'll have
to stop using RealVNC.

Thanks for your help,

Alex

It's your video driver, not vnc.
I had the same problem with some new fangled 'super smart' intel drivers that we're going to save the planet by turning off the video if there was no screen detected. A bit of a problem is a server rack with 8 or more machines.

Solution:
Remove the 'super-smart' video driver and use the default mickeysoft driver.

Cheers,
John

Hi:

You "might" have luck fiddling with the BIOS settings of the machine in addition to the settings of the Video Driver.

We didn't have any luck with that even after the manufacturer did a special Bios for us. You may have better luck than we did.

There is one subtle difference we had from your problem.....

We could always see video on TNVC, it was the KVM output that went black. So it's a slightly different issue that yours.

Are you using the mirror diver?

If not, try it, if you are, try turning it off and see how you get on.

Cheers,

john

Hello, thanks for your answer.

I understand that is not a problem cause by RealVNC, but I can't give up using manufacturer graphics card drivers. Sometimes I use some functionality to leverage its processing capacity.

Just wondering if there is any way to install a virtual driver to simulate an always-on display or a virtual graphics card.

As I have been reading on the internet, UltraVNC does not suffer this problem, although I have not tried it myself. I expected to find a solution for RealVNC.

Alex

Wouldn't it be simpler to just insert a dummy plug in the d-sub socket
of your server. With the appropriate pins strapped the pc would think
it was connected to a real monitor.

Hi Alex:

TightNVC is the other way around, it always connects even if the
physical output is blanked by the driver.

Cheers,
john
